Merchan said in his decision Friday that he wanted to avoid any perception that the sentence was intended to tilt the scales in the presidential campaign. People in rural communities depend on local pharmacies for more than just prescription medicines. Many rural pharmacies offer immunizations, blood pressure testing and other services that can be difficult to get in remote places where traditional health care providers are few and far between.
