Celebrating Local Hero Marty Costos: 23 Years of Preserving Cortez's Ancient Heritage
National Volunteer Week highlights individuals like Marty Costos, who has found fulfillment in her post-retirement volunteer work at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (CANM) in Cortez, Colorado. After retiring from a 40-year teaching career, Marty has spent 23 years volunteering at CANM, taking on various roles, with a particular interest in curation. She handles artifacts that are over a thousand years old, gaining insights into the ancient inhabitants of the area.
Local Artist Aida McDowell Wins Cortez Historic Preservation Coloring Book Contest
The Cortez Coloring Book contest, a collaborative project with the City of Cortez, the LOR Foundation, Cortez Retail Enhancement Association, and the City of Cortez Public Arts Advisory Committee and Historic Preservation Board, has declared its winners. The contest invited local artists to create coloring book pages that celebrate Cortez's history. It attracted over 70 entries from 29 local artists and students, including eight cover page designs.
Award-winning author to speak at Cortez Library
The Cortez Public Library is holding an author talk featuring fiction writer and poet Stacie Denetsosie on Wednesday, April 10th at 5 p.m. In 2023, she published her debut short story collection called “The Missing Morningstar and Other Stories,” which was named 2024 Southwest Book of the Year. El Pomar Foundation has opened applications for its 2024 senior leadership experience program, taking place September 24th through the 27th. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has launched a Colorado Passport Program to encourage people to visit Colorado’s state parks and 15 fish hatcheries. Free passports and stamps are available at Colorado state parks and hatcheries. The Business Support division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade and the Colorado Department of Revenue released a free, self-paced sales tax fundamental course for business owners covering tax responsibilities and how to stay compliant.
