WINKEL: Medicare Part D open enrollment
Medicare can be challenging to navigate. If you are eligible, you know that enrolling in hospital insurance, Part B, supplemental coverage, and a drug plan can be overwhelming. The good news is that if you aren’t pleased with your current coverage, open enrollment allows you to make some changes. For example, you can review your current drug plan and see if it will be your best option next year. Since Part D plans tend to change yearly, it’s smart to see what that means for your coverage and costs.

'Letter to the Editor' - Solar panels in Barton Co.
A small group of landowners and a big solar company do not represent Barton County. We have a foreign solar company that came in under the radar and started throwing money at landowners. They didn’t have the common courtesy to meet and greet the county commissioners or the city council until they had a strong foothold in the county. They didn’t know what the Cheyenne Bottoms were and after finding out have done nothing to protect or support our treasure which would have been the logical and civilized endearing response to our community. They have remained silent and done nothing to expose their plan which probably doesn’t include any significant improvements for our county.
Fort Larned plans 2024 Candlelight Tour
FORT LARNED – It’s time to get ready for this year’s Candlelight Tour at Fort Larned National Historic Site. This year we’re exploring the role of the Post Trader in the life of a frontier military post. Post traders were merchants granted a license to operate a store on the post to provide soldiers with items not issued by the Army. Being able to get things like soap, writing paper, and special foods, just to name a few, was very helpful for men stationed far from towns or cities. The Post Trader had his downsides, though, one of which was selling alcohol in his store, which could cause lots of problems for the officers and men. The scenes in this year’s tour will highlight both the good and bad side of having a civilian store on post.
