GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks opportunity to return to Emporia and the class 5A State Tournament came to an end in Great Bend Friday night as the Panthers answered a late Salthawk run to defeat the Salthawks 69-54. Panther boys headed to state for first time in 14 years
The last time the Great Bend High School boys' basketball team appeared at the state tournament in 2010, the Class 5A field included future Kansas City Chief Blake Bell and future Kansas City Royal Bubba Starling. The future, then, is wide open for the next group of players. With a 69-54 win against Hutchinson Friday night at GBHS, the Panthers are headed back to state for the first time in 14 years.

Panther boys survive and advance in round one of 5A playoffs
The wins don't have to be pretty this time of the year. The madness got underway a few days early as the Great Bend boys played host to a Bishop Carroll team with just seven wins on the season in Tuesday's Class 5A playoff opener at Great Bend High School. Four area wrestlers celebrate weekend with state championships
The Ball dynasty has come to an end at Hoisington High School. At least on the wrestling mat. For more than a decade, the five Ball brothers - Brandon, Jonathan, Christopher, Joshua, and Josiah - have been piling up state championships and medals. Heading into Saturday's Class 3-2-1A finale, only Josiah lacked a state title. He joined the club with a 9-1 major decision against Decatur Community's Lukas Zodrow in Saturday's 138-pound finals in Salina.

Immediately following the meeting, the Board of Education may take an optional tour of the Little Panthers Preschool located at 1809 24th St. There will be no board discussion or action during or after the tour.
Derrick bringing mascots back at Central Plains High School
The mascot is trying to make a comeback at the high school level. When USD 112 Central Plains was created more than a decade ago, officials were looking for a unique mascot fitting for the area. As the Oilers, the CPHS logo has featured an oil derrick from day one. In August, CPHS introduced Derrick the mascot. Parent Teacher Organization Vice President Karla Hurley said he's a great representation of the oilfield workers in the area.
