Students & parents can learn scholarship tips at Barton workshop
Not only does the Barton Foundation award hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to Barton students each year, but it also aims to help students succeed in all scholarship endeavors and is offering a thorough but easily digestible scholarship workshop March 5 at 2 and 6 p.m. in the Academic Development Center in the Barton Library, room 136 or via zoom at https://bartonccc-edu.zoom.us/j/9150677357.
๐Hays girls sweep WAC; boys fall in finale
Hays finished the regular season on the road in Great Bend. The four teams entered with a combined 55 wins and both girls teams state ranked. Hays High never trailed in the second half as they pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 42-36 win over Great Bend to finish the WAC schedule undefeated.

13-foot dancing robot highlights close of GB Reads Initiative
USD 428 is closing another chapter on its Great Bend Reads Initiative. GB Reads was first launched in 2015, and the 2024 edition had K-6 students in the district reading Peter Brown's "The Wild Robot." This year's initiative kicked off on Jan. 8 and also included a scavenger hunt with robots hidden around town. Public Information Director Andrea Bauer said this year's program came to a close Wednesday with the Great Bend High School Danceline and a 13-foot robot from Kansas City's StoneLion Puppets performing at each school.

Barton CC students named to Deanโs List for fall 2023
Barton Community College has named 314 students to the Deanโs List for the fall 2023 semester. To qualify for this honor, students must have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and maintained a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.99 on a 4.0 or "A" letter scale.
Barton Community College expecting to increase tuition & fees
During the Tuesday study session for the Barton Community College Board of Trustees, Vice President of Administration Mark Dean told the board the college is planning on raising tuition and fees for the 2025 fiscal year. While rates will vary, Dean said to expect a $2 increase in tuition per credit hour and a $2 bump in fees per credit hour.
USD 428 Board hears first read on new K-6 reading curriculum
The science of reading has become a big part of the elementary education process. Monday night, the USD 428 Board of Education heard from several teachers and administrators in a first reading of suggested changes to the Great Bend district's K-6 English Language Arts curriculum. If approved, the district will spend $387,427 for the new curriculum until the next update in seven years.
