USD 428 BOE approves NYC trip for Great Bend High orchestra students
The COVID pandemic threw many things off kilter. One of those things was the trip schedule for Great Bend High School orchestra students. Last year, the USD 428 Board of Education approved a small trip to Colorado. Getting back on schedule for larger trips, 6-12 Orchestra Instructor Aubrey Maneth asked the board Monday evening for approval of a New York City trip at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
Great Bend High School forensics off to winning start

The Great Bend High School Forensics Team has brought home team sweepstake trophies and many individual medals from each of their four opening tournaments. There are 31 students competing for the Panthers. They can select from twelve different individual speaking, interpretation, debate and acting events to prepare for competition.

Holy Family hosting 5th-6th Grade Scholar's Bowl today
Holy Family School will host a fifth and sixth grade Scholars' Bowl on Monday, February 12. Seven rounds of competition will be held with questions from the areas of Social Science, Language Arts, Science, Math, Fine Arts, Sports and Current Events. The competition will be held at the School and the public is invited to attend and enjoy watching the students compete.

Six Lady Panther wrestlers headed to state
The Lady Panther wrestlers dropped out of the Class 6-5A rankings heading into Saturday's regional tournament in Dodge City. The only thing that mattered out West was making the top four in each bracket and qualifiying for state. Six Lady Panther wrestlers did just that and Great Bend scored 156 points for fourth in the toughest of the four 6-5A regionals. No. 2 Dodge City won with 190 points, followed by top-ranked Garden City with 174.5 points. No. 7 Derby scored 161 points for third, and No. 4 Hays also scored 156 points.
Barton to host Adult Education classes downtown
Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon begin another nine-week session of classes. However, orientation days are required before starting the classes. Students must attend all orientation days in-person, which will be held from 1-4 p.m. on March. 4-7. The Center for Adult Education is located at 1025 Main Street in Great Bend.
Great Bend, WAC schools agree to use shot clock in 2024-25 season
Athletic directors from the five Western Athletic Conference schools, including Great Bend High School, meet on the first Wednesday of each month in Dodge City. A big topic of discussion at the Feb. 7 meeting was the league-wide adoption of the shot clock for the 2024-25 basketball season. GBHS Activities Director Matt Westerhaus said all five schools agreed to implement the shot clock next year.
Ellsworth Correctional Facility, Barton Com. College have learning celebration
Barton Community College and Ellsworth Correctional Facility honored the achievements of ECF residents at their annual learning celebration this past October. This year's celebration recognized 95 graduates for their dedication to their education by receiving an associate degree, high school diploma, welding certificate, or other work preparedness certificate. The residents' hard work and hours of studying were evident, as a record 13 students walked the stage to receive their associate degree.
