Washburn County commencement ceremonies May 24, 31
WASHBURN COUNTY — Washburn County school districts will be holding their graduations Friday, May 24. Shell Lake High School’s commencement ceremony will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the school performance gym. Valedictorian is Kylee Dahlstrom and salutatorian is Emily Swan. Spooner High School will have its graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. in the high school gym. Valedictorian is Luke Popp and salutatorian is Carson Klein. Northwood School in Minong will hold commencement at 7 p.m. in the Richards Auditorium. Valedictorian is Zoya Rich, and salutatorian is Zoey Wilson. Birchwood School’s graduation will be Friday, May 31, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the school. Valedictorian is Josh Weatherhead and salutatorian is Naomi (Theresa) Labahn.
LCO University presents master's degrees, other honors
Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University celebrated 44 undergraduate degree and certificate recipients and their first 15 master’s degree recipients during their 38th qnnual commencement ceremony, Saturday, May 18 at the LCO Honor the Earth Powwow grounds. School Board discusses benefits, cons of four-day week
SPOONER — The Spooner School Board discussed the pros and cons of the district going to a four-day school week at their Committee of the Whole meeting Monday, May 6. Hunter Education opportunities in Spooner
SPOONER — There will be two opportunities for Spooner area students to become Hunter Education-certified in coming months. The traditional Spooner Hunter Education class will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Indianhead Rifle & Pistol Club (IRPC) at 6:30 p.m. This is a great class for students who have had little or no gun handling/shooting experience. Leadership Washburn County class of 2024 graduates
SPOONER — The Leadership Washburn County class of 2024 graduated on Thursday, May 2, with a ceremony at Round Man Brewing Co. in Spooner. The eight-month leadership program has been going on for years, with students sponsored by local organizations receiving opportunities to become better community leaders. The group learns about Washburn County’s facets, including agriculture, government, education, youth and more. HHS girls soccer tops Spooner, 3-0
The Hayward Hurricanes girls soccer team shut out the Spooner Rails 3-0 on April 30 at Heidi Friermood Field to earn their second win of the season. Hayward’s first goal came when Kylie MattMiller gained a penalty kick from a rough play in the box. New staff at Shell Lake Schools
SHELL LAKE — The Shell Lake School Board hired a number of staff members at their meeting Monday, April 15. Morgan Forrestal and Peggy Jones-Matz were hired as part-time food service employees for 2024-25. Julie Westlund, Eric Schenkenberg, Katie Zehm, Stan Lamb and Ashley Krause were hired as summer custodial crew. Steve Byrd was hired as middle school track coach, and Jennifer Boucher was transferred from third grade to sixth grade. ...
New principal at SHS
SPOONER — The Spooner Area School District School Board has selected Peter Schroeder to serve as the principal of Spooner High School, effective July 1. Schroeder currently serves as the middle school/high school principal in the Boscobel Area School District. Prior to becoming an administrator, he taught math, physics and chemistry, as well as having extensive experience coaching and serving as an athletic official. Schroeder is a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army as a field artillery officer. District Administrator Dr. David Aslyn commented, “We are pleased to have Peter Schroeder leading Spooner High School for the upcoming school year. He is a talented educator with solid leadership skills. His commitment to building relationships and working collaboratively really impressed the students, parents, teachers, board members and administrators involved in interviews. I’m confident that he will do well serving the students, families and staff of the Spooner High School. We are fortunate to have a person of Peter’s caliber joining the SASD leadership team.”

SPOONER — For some, it was young love. For others, it was a great night out with their best friends. For the many proud parents in the Spooner High School auditorium, it was a bittersweet moment watching their children grow up. And for everybody, it was the spring tradition of the Spooner Junior Prom.
