Here Come the Mummies round out Promenade Park summer concert lineup
Bizarre and bandaged funk-rock band Here Come the Mummies has been announced as the final summer concert at Promenade Park presented by HB Concerts, Inc. Here’s what is known about Here Come the Mummies: It’s a eight piece funk-rock band whose anonymous members dress in mummy bandages and sing often humorous songs. Beyond that, not much is known about the members of the band, which was formed in 2000 in Nashville. The band members go by such monikers as Mummy Cass, Eddie Mummy, Spaz, and K.W. Tut. The group, which is rumored to contain several Grammy winning musicians, has played in support of P-Funk, Al Green, Mavis Staples, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Cheap Trick and has appeared on The Bob and Tom Show and That’s My Jam with Jimmy Fallon. Here Come the Mummies will perform at Promenade Park on Aug. 31.
Dining together: Kosher dinner at Etz Chayim is about more than just food
Volunteers from Toledo’s Jewish community spent days peeling 90 pounds of onions, butchering 40 pounds of lamb, and slicing 25 pounds of carrots to prepare for Chef Uri Arnon’s recent visit from Israel. The chef and restaurateur ventured to Toledo to prepare a free kosher meal for guests at Congregation Etz Chayim on May 16 — which showcased community, togetherness, and resilience on the plates he prepared. The community dinner, hosted by the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Greater Toledo, invited like-minded individuals to break bread together and hear the chef’s story. This gathering was made possible by Partnership2Gether, which is a consortium of 17 Jewish communities in the United States, along with Budapest, Hungary, and more, said Mary Bilyeu, the community relations programming specialist at the Jewish Federation.
Music professor, composer retires from UT after 40 years
Professor David Jex is cleaning out his office at the University of Toledo, a monumental task after 40 years in one place. He’s already finished with classroom lessons and grading papers. But one question is left: You can take a music teacher out of the classroom, but can you take the classroom out of the music teacher? Nigel Burgoine, artistic director of the Ballet Theatre of Toledo, sounded doubtful. Jex, a prolific composer, has written music for some of Burgoine’s ballet productions, including the Great Pancake Escape, Meema the Lemur Becomes a Ballerina, and more.
