The real estate market in Alamogordo is one that has seen a lot of activity and an upward spiral in home prices since the days of the pandemic. We hear reports of a tight market and there is the never ending concerns about interest rates and inflation. However, the fact remains that Alamogordo remains a “sellers market.” Even with higher interest rates, than in years past, real estate is being sold and prices are ever increasing well over 2020 prices and well over the $200k threshold of years past.

Affordable Housing in Alamogordo: A Multiple Pronged Approach
Alamogordo is at a crossroads on multiple fronts jobs and housing affordability are two important issues of concern. Recruiting new business to the city that pays living wages is a need that seems to continue to allude political and business leadership. A new direction for the Center of Commerce with a new attitude and a new director with a commitment to better partnership with business and government is a step forward. Taking the politics out of discussions and backing away from controversy, finding common ground between the various factions of Alamogordo and building upon the diversity of the community is a start.

A property at 1209 Ohio Avenue has been abandoned and derelict for 15 years. It had a yard maintained by a prior owner, but was abandoned, damaged and not livable in the present condition. The property sold to an investment group that wanted to have the building zoned R4 consistent with other properties in the district from R3. This modification in zoning would have allowed the developer to preserve the look and feel of the exterior of the house yet make it palatable to invest the several 100 thousand required to make it livable and bring it to code.
