RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Hurricane Milton is a raging storm that is churning in the Gulf Of Mexico. The storm is currently at Category 5 status and is expected to weaken as it approaches the west coast of Florida. Tampa is looking to be stared down by the storm on Wednesday night, into early Thursday morning. Back here in the Black Hills, we are expecting clear skies to continue tonight as we see temperatures drop into the 50s in town. Unfortunately, smoke and haze will stick around through the overnight hours. Our smoke futurecast is showing moderate smoke over Western South Dakota and heavy smoke over NE Wyoming tomorrow morning, the heavy smoke will move over Western South Dakota by the afternoon and evening and will continue to be draped over the Black Hills through the day on Wednesday. The smoke is still in the forecast for tomorrow with temperatures getting warm once again. We will see the low 80s by the afternoon with plenty of sunshine shining behind that smoke in the upper atmosphere. Overnight tonight, temperatures make it into the 50s in Rapid City, but most of us will fall into the mid to upper 40s. A few spots on the SD Plains will see the upper 30s overnight. Overall, these temperatures are above average for the night with clear skies settling in. Tomorrow, temperatures make it back into the upper 70s and the low 80s for much of the region as mostly sunny skies dominate. Smoke and haze continue throughout the day across all of KOTA Territory. Rapid City will see the 80s through Thursday. Record warmth is possible on Thursday. The previous record is 87°, set in 2015. Then we are back into the 60s and 70s for the rest of the forecast.
