A Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured Friday when a driver rammed him during a traffic stop in New Tampa, deputies said.

Deputy Kalin Hall tried to pull over a black BMW on Bearss Avenue near Nebraska Avenue about 12:05 a.m. but the driver sped away, according to a news release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

About 20 minutes later, Hall tried again to pull over the BMW at Plantation Oaks Drive in Tampa Palms. When Hall got out of his patrol car, the BMW driver rammed him and drove away, deputies said.

Hall, 33, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with a fractured leg. He was in stable condition and was expected to undergo surgery Friday.

Deputies found the BMW abandoned about a mile from where Hall was struck. Investigators have identified the owner of the car, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies asked anyone with information about the incident to call the sheriff’s office at 813-247-8200.

Hall has been with the sheriff’s office for 11 years.

“This suspect’s actions have no regard for human life, choosing to ram a deputy without considering that his reckless actions could tragically impact the deputy’s life,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement included with the news release.
