Baker Mayfield Has Hilarious Analogy For His Status With Buccaneers

    By Dave Holcomb,

Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield has experienced just about everything the NFL has to offer for a quarterback. In 2018, he was the No. 1 pick of the NFL draft. But then in December 2022, he was flat out released.

As one would expect, Mayfield clearly prefers the security of being an NFL starter. He expressed that idea with a funny analogy during an appearance on The Mike Calta Show .

“You’re having a lot more fun when you’re not getting shipped off to different places like a piece of dirty laundry, I’ll tell you that,” Mayfield said . “So when I got embraced in Tampa, it made a world of difference. I’ve always played ball to enjoy it. I mean, it is a game. Yes, it is my job, but I love it so much.”

Mayfield proved to be more than a dirty piece of laundry through his opportunity with the Buccaneers last year.

Mayfield had to earn the starting job with the Buccaneers last summer. But he did exactly in the preseason and started 17 games for the first time in his career.

In the 2023 regular season, Mayfield threw for 4,000 passing yards for the first time. He also had 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while averaging 7.1 yards per attempt.

Behind those statistics, Mayfield finished third for the Comeback Player of the Year award. He also led Tampa Bay to a playoff victory.

This summer, Mayfield is entering the season as his team's clear-cut starter behind center for the first time in three years.
