BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - As Memorial Day draws near, the spirit of community service and remembrance fills the air in Berkeley Heights. Led by Dr. Patrick Smith, recently appointed chairman of the Berkeley Heights Veterans Affairs Committee (BH VAC), a dedicated team of volunteers, including members of the BHPD and township employees, worked tirelessly to prepare Veterans Memorial Park for the township's Memorial Day ceremony.

Their efforts focused on the meticulous planting of ground flags at the Memorial, ensuring that every detail was perfect for the solemn occasion. The goal: to honor the servicemen and servicewomen who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Spearheaded by the BH VAC, this ongoing beautification and maintenance project is a collaborative effort, with local businesses like Dean’s Greens, ASL Landscaping, and Lawn Tech pitching in, alongside individuals such as Sergeant Trent Fettes of BHPD USMC and the BH DPW.

For residents who have admired the Hometown Heroes Banners but were unsure of how to obtain one or locate a specific banner, the BH Veterans Affairs Committee has provided a simple solution. By visiting the township website at berkeleyheights.com and navigating to the Veterans Affairs Committee section, residents can access information about acquiring or locating a banner through the newly established database.

"Special recognition is due to VAC members Trent Fettes and Jon Hawkins, both USMC veterans, for their efforts in updating the VAC webpage. Thanks are also extended to Carrie Butler of BHDPW and Lisa Barfield of Clearpoint Communications for their contributions to the Hometown Hero Banner program. Additionally, the BH DPW deserves acknowledgment for their diligent work in installing and maintaining the banners, twice a year, in honor of Memorial Day and Veterans Day," said Dr. Smith.

As preparations continue for the annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, 2024, the community is invited to join in honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Organized by the Berkeley Heights Recreation Department and the Veteran Affairs Committee, the Annual Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 9:30 a.m., starting at Snyder Ave and Locust Ave, near the YMCA, and concluding at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

This year, Sergeant Thomas Lombardi, a distinguished two-time Purple Heart recipient from the US Army who served during the Vietnam War, will be honored as the Grand Marshal of the parade. Following the parade, attendees are invited to a commemorative gathering at the park, where complimentary hot dogs, drinks, and Italian ice will be served. It will be a time of reflection and gratitude as we gather to pay homage to our fallen heroes.
