NEWARK — Stay off the roads.
That’s the advice of acting Gov. Tahesha Way, who declared a state of emergency that went into effect at 6 p.m. on Friday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby were being felt in the area.
“I urge all residents to stay indoors and off of the roads until the storm passes,” Way said in a statement. “If you must drive, slow down and use extra caution.”
The state of emergency for all 21 New Jersey counties allows the state to speed assistance to communities and apply for federal aid.
The state of emergency came after a National Weather Service tornado watch had been in effect until 10 a.m. Friday and a wind advisory was in effect until 11 p.m. for Essex County and surrounding regions, forecasters said.
