MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — The Mary Jane Mullen Memorial Foundation is making a final push for the community’s support of its Scholarship Fund.

The Foundation, which was created in honor of Mary Jane Mullen, the beloved and long-serving staff member at Lenape High School who passed away in May 2023 , has used this month as Fundraising Month to achieve a $2,500 fundraising goal for Mary Jane's Scholarship Fund.

"In the month of August, we are dedicated to doing what we can to remember the role that she played in all of our lives, and ask that you help us spread the word that August is Fundraising Month," said the Foundation on its Facebook page .

The Foundation was able to award five $1,000 scholarships to outstanding Lenape High School students in honor of Mary Jane Mullen this year and, as the new school year approaches, is seeking to make sure that it will continue to be able to provide this important aid and celebrate her legacy by "keeping (her) spirit alive through education." While the Foundation was able to hit its $2,500 goal for August Fundraising Month, it is still looking to the community for support.

Those who would like to make a donation can mail a contribution to the Mary Jane Mullen Memorial Foundation, 102 Apple Lane, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054; or donate online at https://tinyurl.com/MaryJaneFoundation .

All donations are tax-deductible, and the Mary Jane Mullen Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with Federal ID number 93-2478931.

Described by the Lenape Regional High School District (LRHSD) as "the heart of Lenape High School," Mullen was a student in the first sophomore class when Lenape High School opened in 1958. She began work as a secretary at the school one month after she graduated in July 1961, and "her hiring forever changed Lenape High School," said LRHSD officials in a statement at the time of her passing.

While Mullen's senior yearbook entry reads, "Wants to become a real good secretary... friendliness, combined with an ever-sincere nature... likes people, good food, clothes and 'all my friends'... she is the able President of the Future Secretary's Club", LRHSD officials said she wildly "surpassed these career goals, becoming the definition of what it means to be a 'real good secretary,'" and approached each day with "genuine love, kindness and caring that impacted not only students and staff, but the overall culture of Lenape High School."

Mullen described what the Lenape High School students and staff meant to her in a note from April 20, 2023, less than a month before she passed away.

"This Lenape High School is my happy place... I have (what it takes) to continue on and help our Lenape kids — I love them very much — and so many teachers that I work with, a pleasure for me, each and every day... I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. This is my home. Love you — Thank you, Mary Jane."
