MOUNT HOLLY, NJ — A 30-year-old Riverton resident has been convicted of fatally stabbing a man at a Mount Laurel motel last spring, Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw has announced.
After a Superior Court jury deliberated for about five hours, Taylor Perkins was found guilty last week of Manslaughter (Second Degree) in the 2023 death of Michael Jefferies, 36.
Mount Laurel police officers were dispatched to the Rodeway Inn motel on Route 73 on April 20, 2023 at about 10AM for a report of two men fighting, where they found the body of Jefferies on the ground outside of a second-floor room near a stairwell. An autopsy later found that Jefferies died from multiple stab wounds.
According to law enforcement, after stabbing Jefferies, Perkins took off on foot to a nearby BMW dealership and drove off in an SUV before abandoning the vehicle in Evesham. In Evesham, he stole a truck belonging to an Xfinity worker who was on a ladder at the time. Perkins was eventually apprehended at a residence on Decatur Street in Camden .
In addition to Second Degree Manslaughter, Perkins was also found guilty of two counts of Theft by Unlawful Taking (Third Degree), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (Third Degree) and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Fourth Degree). Sentencing is scheduled for October 18 in Mount Holly.
Perkins was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Rachel Conte, and the investigation was conducted by the Mount Laurel Police Department and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, with assistance from the Camden County Police Department, the Cherry Hill Police Department and the Evesham Township Police Department.
