A man is dead after he was shot by a police officer in Taylor Mill Sunday, according to the Kentucky State Police.

Taylor Mill and Covington officers responded to Grand Avenue just before 3 p.m. for a report of a person with a weapon, according to dispatchers and Taylor Mill police.

"Officers encountered the suspect inside the home threatening someone and wielding a knife," a press release from Taylor Mill said. "A shot was fired. The Kentucky State Police responded to investigate."

Kentucky State Police reported the man died on the scene. The suspect's name has not been released.

Many jurisdictions in Kentucky do not investigate incidents of their own officers shooting citizens. Kentucky State Police often offer to conduct independent investigations at the request of the local agencies.

"KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation," the agency said in a press release. "To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathered."

Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders said no officers were injured during the incident. He added that the family member who was threatened with the knife did not require medical treatment.

Taylor Mill police said there is no threat to the public and encouraged anyone with information to call Kentucky State Police at 859-428-1212.

This is the second time police officers have shot someone in the Greater Cincinnati area in the past week. On Thursday, 48-year-old Juan Mack was shot and killed outside Music Hall in Over-the-Rhine. Police said he had repeatedly stabbed a woman before leading officers on a chase. He was armed with a gun at the time of the shooting, investigators said.
