The U.S. Marshal's Service released new details on a fatal standoff at a Tempe residence that left a wanted man dead last week.

The agency issued a news release Monday afternoon that said members of its task force responsible for apprehending fugitives were at a residence near Southern Avenue and Rural Road on July 18 to arrest 35-year-old Matt Walsh, who was wanted by Chandler police on warrants for burglary, trafficking in stolen property and felony flight while being on active probation.

Colleen Grayman, a department spokesperson, said members of the task force ordered Walsh and the home's other occupants to exit the residence. Four people who complied were detained before being released while Walsh and an unidentified female remained inside the home.

Grayman said marshals, along with Chandler police officers, SWAT team members from Tempe and Mesa police attempted to convince Walsh to surrender peacefully. Grayman said Walsh shot at officers from inside the home a short time later, prompting officers to return fire.

Walsh then exited the home and fled on foot, jumping into a neighbor's yard with a handgun before police shot him. Grayman said Walsh ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

After the shooting, Grayman said officers noticed smoke coming from the home with multiple fire agencies responding to extinguish the blaze. It was not immediately clear how the fire was started or what happened to the unidentified female who was inside the home with Walsh.

No officers were injured during the incident. It was not immediately known how many officers fired their weapons.

Grayman said the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team would investigate the shooting. Officials did not immediately respond to questions regarding the unidentified female's whereabouts.
