TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Thousands of yellow rubber ducks raced this evening for the 7th Annual Wabash Valley Rubber Duck Regatta, at Fairbanks Park.

Participants purchased rubber ducks with the chance of winning $10,000 if theirs crosses the finish line first. The regatta provides additional funding toward Terre Haute Catholic Charities. All proceeds will help the organization provide food, after school programming, shelter, and additional human and household needs.

This year, Catholic Charities partnered with a Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology club and created a 100 to 150-foot-long land-based water slide to race the ducks down, instead of the Wabash River.

Assistant Agency Director Jennifer Tames says she’s been working there for 15 years and believes it is very rewarding for the community.

“When we look at our community and recognize that there are so many individuals who are struggling with things like food insecurity or finding safe shelter or with youth who need additional activities and a safe place to go in the afternoon. Catholic Charities is there, and I know every day that I go home that I have made a difference.”

The winner of the rubber duck regatta is George McAfoos.
