MARSHALL, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — Student anglers from Vigo County high schools are gearing up for the 4th annual High School Bass Fishing Championship.

According to Terre Haute North Fishing Coach Bill Berry the event will be held on Sunday, July 28 at Mill Creek Lake in Marshall. The event will feature anglers from Terre Haute North, South, and West Vigo high schools.

Students compete in pairs with multiple teams representing each school. Each team will also have a volunteer boat captain who is responsible for steering their team’s boat. The winners will be crowned as champions as an individual team, while the school with the highest total will receive the Scott Javins Memorial Trophy to keep until next year’s event.

The program also raises money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Through the programs four year history, the students have raised more than $30,000.

Students will fish from 7 a.m. (EDT) until weigh in at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) with the winners to be announced at 4 p.m. (EDT).

In 2023, the Terre Haute North team of Cole Berry and Wesley Mickelson won the competition. This year defending champion Wesley Mickelson is a senior and will defend his crown. Berry, who has since graduated and now fishes for Purdue University, will be returning as a volunteer boat captain for the event.
