Hurricane Beryl weakened as it made landfall Friday morning on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, but forecasters warn the deadly storm could still pose a threat as it moves toward the U.S. over the weekend.

The powerful hurricane, which blew into the Caribbean as the earliest Category 5 storm since when, was blamed for 11 deaths across the Caribbean as the storm produced heavy rainfall and high winds across the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Barbados, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Hurricane Beryl still had 110 mph winds on Friday after making landfall and forecasters said residents along Texas' Gulf Coast should begin to make preparedness plans. The storm is expected to make landfall in the U.S. on Sunday along the Texas coast with a high risk of rip currents and minor flooding in advance of the storm, the Weather Channel said.

"Today and Saturday will be our calm before the storm," the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi wrote in an advisory on Friday.

The effects of the hurricane are expected to flare up on Friday evening, including a high risk of rip currents, the Center said. By Saturday, the coast could see some minor flooding as some showers begin ahead of the hurricane's arrival.

Residents of the area should make "preparedness plans," forecasters said.

How do you pronounce Hurricane Beryl?

Alberto was the first storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season and Beryl is the second (Chris and Debby are next).

Beryl is pronounced “BEHR-ril” like the name of the architectural paint company and adding “ril’ at the end, the National Hurricane Center said.
