Hurricane Beryl Devastates Texas: 1 Million Without Power, At Least 2 Killed

In the early hours of Monday, Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

With heavy rains and powerful winds, the storm knocked out power to approximately 1.5 million homes and businesses, causing widespread flooding and prompting emergency responders to rescue stranded residents. Tragically, at least two individuals lost their lives as a result of the storm’s impact.

Hurricane Beryl had already left a trail of devastation in Mexico and the Caribbean before setting its sights on Texas. As a Category 1 hurricane, it reached landfall shortly before 4 a.m. and later weakened to a tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center has warned that damaging winds and flash flooding will persist as Beryl continues to push inland.

The aftermath of the storm in Texas has left CenterPoint Energy reporting 1.5 million homes and businesses without power in Houston. Flood warnings have been issued along the Texas coast, where a powerful storm surge pushed water ashore, and further inland as heavy rainfall continues. Streets in Houston quickly became inundated, exacerbating the city’s ongoing battle with flooding following previous heavy storms.

Challenges and Ongoing Efforts:

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, currently acting as the governor while Governor Greg Abbott is out of the country, has said due to the persistently strong winds, crews are unable to safely address the power outages. Patrick has also warned that the flooding caused by Hurricane Beryl may last for several days, as the storm continues to dump rain onto already saturated ground. “This is not a one-day event,” Patrick said.

As Texas continues to grapple with the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, the focus remains on restoring power, mitigating flooding, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents affected by this merciless storm.
