WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The Memorial Mavericks are burning up, starting their season on a seven-game win streak, earning them the honor of Texoma’s Team of the Week.

A mish-mash of girls from across Wichita Falls are setting the tone early in their first season as teammates at Memorial High School.

“We need to show everyone who we are,” Ashley Hughes, senior middle, said. “We are a new program with a new coach. This is a showcase to show everyone who we are and to announce ourselves.”

In Memorial’s first season, the team wants to define what it means to be a Maverick—and these girls are doing just that.

“We call that now the standard, and that’s the standard for every practice and every game we have,” said head coach Kelli Barnett. “They’re just going to keep pushing it up with each game.”

“It’s new, different, a whole new school,” sophomore setter Bella Wood said. “But, you know, we overcome obstacles, and all we can do is work hard.”

At the Sanger Showcase, the Mavericks did not lose a set— completing a rare, perfect run. Their wins looked easy on paper, but these results have been brewing for almost half a year.

“They have the right spirit to make the goal we set forth for this season,” Barnett said. “We started back in February when I first got hired by setting goals, and we are definitely excited.”

A season ago, most of these girls were strangers, and now they’re firing as one machine. Memorial’s attack is fueled by the one-two punch of Addie Renner and Eva Grisel, who have been playing together since their sandbox days.

“We actually used to play on the same club team,” Grisel said. “We have that, and we are very good friends, so that helps. We have a very good connection, and I think it makes playing a lot more fun.”

In addition to Renner and Grisel, Madi Bobbitt, a senior outside hitter, shows a strong attack to help the Memorial Mavericks continue to roll through the season.
