    ALLIANCE ZONING – City of Alliance Board of Zoning Appeals has canceled its Sept. 17 meeting.

    SKIN CANCER SCREENING – Columbiana County Health District will play host to a skin cancer screening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the district’s office at 7360 State Route 45 in Lisbon. Appointments are limited, and interested individuals should call the Health District office at 330-424-0272, ext. 114. Screenings are free for residents of Columbiana County Health District, including Salem, and will be $5 for those from out of the county, paid in cash at the appointment.

    KNOX TRUSTEES – Knox Township trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 2895 Knox School Road. Trustees will convene at 6:45 p.m. to review bills.

    POTTER IN THE PARK – Alliance Parks and Recreation and Greater Alliance Foundation will present “Potter in the Park” from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5 at Silver Park. The event is free and open to the public and will feature the Fantastic Beasts of Raptor Hollow Sanctuary. Among other activities will be Dr. Culpepper’s Mad Science; rides on Hogwarts Express; a mystical trail around Kidwell Lake; magic; a bounce house; Harry Potter-themed crafts; and refreshments. Dr. Culpepper’s demos will be at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Fantastic Beasts will be on the park’s sound stage at 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The live shows and science demonstrations will continue on Oct. 12 and Oct. 19 at the same times.

    COLUMBIANA HEALTH BOARD – Columbiana County Board of Health plans a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 4 in the board room to discuss personnel.

    ACTON TO SPEAK – Dr. Amy Acton, a Mahoning County native and the former director of the Ohio Department of Health will speak at an event Sept. 14 at Dutch Haus Inn and Suites in Columbiana. Her talk will be called “The Leader We Wish We All Had is You.” The Columbiana County Democratic Women’s Caucus is host for the event. Tickets for her presentation, which will run 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., are available at secure.actblue.com/donate/ccdwc2024 or 330-271-6343.

    OKTOBEERFEST RUN – Beech Creek Botanical Gardens & Nature Preserve and Raptor Hallow Sanctuary will play host to an Oktobeerfest Run at 11 a.m. Sept. 28. The event, which will go from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is a one-mile fun run and walk through the facility, and every quarter-mile, contestants will receive a beer, wine cooler, seltzer, non-alcoholic beverage or water. Contestants can run, walk or race through the course. Registration deadline is Sept. 20 at this shortened link, shorturl.at/GbIiw. Registration fee is $40, or $35 for college students. Funds from the event will go to Beech Creek Gardens and Raptor Hallow Sanctuary.

    ROXY PLAY – Minerva’s Roxy Theatre Players will present Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit” on at 7 p.m. Sept. 6-7. In this classic farce, a crime writer who has been creatively blocked since the death of his first wife is now tensely remarried to a more uptight second wife. He has the idea of putting a spiritualist into a new movie screenplay he's working on, so he invites a notorious stage medium to his house to perform a seance as research into the wiles of these confidence tricksters. To his astonishment, the seance brings back the ghost of wife No. 1, who wreaks havoc. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce, 203 N Market St.; at minervachamber.ticketspice.com/blithe-spirit; or at the door.     ALLIANCE PLANNING − City of Alliance Planning Commission will meet at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 18 in the second-floor conference room at the City Administration Building, 504 E. Main St. Among items up for discussion at the meeting are a request for a conditional use permit for a dual-use cannabis dispensary at 2106 W. State St.; and a site plan review for a culinary arts renovation at Alliance High School.

    TRICK-OR-TREAT – City of Alliance trick-or-treat will be 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31. Alliance city government says residents should leave their porch light on if they wish to receive visitors and participate in trick-or-treat.
