LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued an emergency declaration Saturday after severe thunderstorms knocked down power lines in the northwestern part of the state. Storms with strong winds blew through that part of the state Friday night. About 10,000 customers in Arkansas were without electrical service at midday Saturday, according to poweroutage.us. The governor’s emergency declaration is intended to speed up recovery by waiving rules for commercial vehicles carrying heavy loads with equipment to restore electricity, such as transformers.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The latest search for the remains of 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre victims has ended with three more sets containing gunshot wounds, investigators said. The three are among 11 sets of remains exhumed during the latest excavation in Oaklawn Cemetery, state archaeologist Kary Stackelbeck said Friday. “Two of those gunshot victims display evidence of munitions from two different weapons,” Stackelbeck said. “The third individual who is a gunshot victim also displays evidence of burning.” Forensic anthropologist Phoebe Stubblefield, who will remain on site to examine the remains, said one victim suffered bullet and shotgun wounds while the second was shot with two different caliber bullets.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The brown felt fedora worn by actor Harrison Ford in the second installment of the Indiana Jones movies sold for $630,000 at auction, film and TV memorabilia company Propstore announced Friday. The hat featured in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” had been expected to fetch between $250,000 and $500,000, according to the item’s online description. The fedora comes from the personal collection of the late stunt performer Dean Ferrandini, who also wore it while standing in for Ford as Jones, the dashing archaeologist who really hates snakes.  Keeping the fedora in place during filming was an “ongoing challenge,” Propstore’s expert said in the online description, and foam pieces were inserted to make it fit more snugly.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez has pleaded no contest to attempted murder after he shot at a man in 2022 accused of molesting Velasquez’s relative, a Northern California district attorney’s office said. The office of Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement that Velasquez entered his plea in a San Jose courtroom Friday to felony assault and other gun charges as part of a negotiated agreement with the prosecutor’s office.  The 42-year-old Velasquez was scheduled to go on trial next month. Velasquez, who retired from the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2019, still faces prison time, said Rosen’s office. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.  The man charged with molesting the male relative, who was 4 at the time, is the adult son of the woman who ran the daycare attended by the boy.

BERLIN (AP) — A court in Greenland ruled Thursday that veteran environmental activist and anti-whaling campaigner Paul Watson must remain in custody as authorities consider Japan’s request for his extradition, police said. The court ruled that Watson must remain in detention until Sept. 5 to ensure his presence in connection with a decision on extradition, Greenland police said in a statement, adding that Watson has appealed the decision to Greenland’s High Court. Watson, a 73-year-old Canadian-American citizen, is a former head of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society whose direct action tactics, including high-seas confrontations with whaling vessels, have drawn support from A-list celebrities and featured in the reality television series “Whale Wars.” He was arrested last month on an international warrant issued by Japan when his ship docked in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. Japan’s government then asked Danish authorities to hand over Watson so he could be tried in Japan. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
