BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. — As families prepare for the long Memorial Day weekend, officials are stressing the importance of safety. Whether you're heading to the beach or traveling, keeping safety top of mind is crucial.

Interim Sheriff Chuck Heit of Berrien County reminds beachgoers, especially those planning to visit Silver Beach, to be aware of and adhere to all beach rules. "There’s zero tolerance for alcohol," Heit said. "And while recreational marijuana may be legal, it is not legal to smoke it in public, so there is no marijuana allowed on the beach as well."

Water safety is a top priority for experts. Parents are encouraged to take photos of their children to help identify them quickly if they go missing. Additionally, wearing life jackets is advised for those who are not strong swimmers, and it's important to pay attention to weather and water conditions.

In the unfortunate event of a drowning incident, knowing the right steps can save lives. "You should call 911, alert a lifeguard, and reach or throw something that floats to the person in distress. Do not enter the water yourself, as would-be rescuers often become victims," said Dave Benjamin, Executive Director of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. He also advises beachgoers to mark their spot in the sand to provide lifeguards with a "last seen" location.

Benjamin emphasizes the importance of drowning survival techniques. "If you’re struggling in water over your head, remember to flip, float, and follow. Flip onto your back, float to keep your head above water and calm yourself, conserve energy, and then follow a safe path out of the water," he explained.

Moreover, Benjamin reminds everyone to stay hydrated and use sunscreen while enjoying outdoor activities.

Police officials also caution travelers to plan ahead and expect increased traffic over the holiday weekend. Safe driving practices and patience on the roads can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend for all.
