Elkhart, Ind. — The historic Ruthmere Museum in Elkhart transformed into a hub of community engagement and family fun on Sunday, as it hosted a vibrant Free Family Sunday event. This monthly tradition, held on the first Sunday of each month, offers residents an opportunity to explore one of the museum’s historic buildings at no cost.

This month's event featured more than just a tour. Families enjoyed a lively ice cream social and a bounce house, creating a festive atmosphere for children and adults alike. Adding to the celebration was the second annual Christiana Neighborhood Day, a special occasion designed to connect local residents and showcase area organizations.

Bill Firstenberger, Executive Director of the Ruthmere Foundation, emphasized the museum's commitment to community outreach. “This is a big part of our outreach into the community on a day like this, so we can welcome everybody,” said Firstenberger. “I think when people drive past the Ruthmere on Beardsley Avenue and see the big wall and iron gates, it might not seem like the friendliest place. But we are friendly and strive to open up to the community whenever possible. On days like today, we pull out all the stops and want everyone to understand that.”

Free Family Sundays at Ruthmere run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., offering a delightful mix of historical exploration and community connection each month. For more information about upcoming events, visit the museum's website.
