The Toledo Mud Hens announced on Saturday that Tigers top pitching prospect Jackson Jobe has been promoted to Triple-A Toledo.

The top pitching prospect in all of baseball, Jobe has had a dominant season at Double-A Erie to earn the promotion to Triple-A at age 22.

In 16 starts at Erie this season, Jobe boasts a minuscule 1.95 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 81 strikeouts in 73⅔ innings.

Here are a few things to know about the 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed starter:

    Top pitching prospect status

Once Paul Skenes graduated to major-league status, Jobe became baseball's top pitching prospect. He is the No. 2 overall prospect in the Tigers system behind outfielder Max Clark. He is MLB Pipeline's No. 7 overall prospect in all of baseball. What has allowed Jobe to reach top pitching prospect status? Mostly a deadly fastball-slider combination. His slider grades out as his best pitch with a 70 grade while his fastball is 65-grade. His changeup is a developing pitch that grades out at 60 while he also features a 55-grade cutter with 55-grade control. Altogether, MLB Pipeline gives him a 60 grade as a prospect.

    Wipeout slider

Ever since high school, Jobe has featured an elite slider. According to a 2021 MLB.com article, Jobe’s best pitch registered spin rates above 3,000 rpm, which put the pitch in elite company even before he reached professional baseball. At the time of the article in 2021, the average big-league slider had a spin rate of between 2,300 and 2,500 rpm, and anything more than 2,800 rpm would be considered an elite MLB pitch.

    Spearheads no-hitter at Erie

On July 20, Jobe was the catalyst for a combined no-hitter by Erie pitchers when he threw six hitless innings with two walks and five strikeouts. It was the first no-hitter for Erie since 2019 and the fifth no-hitter in club history. At the time that lowered Jobe's season ERA to 1.38 with a 0.86 WHIP.

    High school exploits

Jobe was not surprisingly dominant as a high-school senior at Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City. He tossed two no-hitters and recorded a 0.14 ERA with 122 strikeouts in 51⅓ innings on his way to Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year honors. Jobe also showcased his hitting skills that year at Heritage Hall with a .469 batting average with seven homers, five triples, 13 doubles, and 13 stolen bases as the team's starting shortstop on days he wasn't dominating on the mound.

    Dad is a professional golfer

Jobe's father, Brandt Jobe, is a current PGA Tour Champions golfer who has spent time on the PGA Tour. Jobe finished tied for 14th at the 1999 Masters, as well as tied for 16th at the 1999 PGA Championship. His best U.S. Open finish is tied for 18th in 2008. He has two career PGA Tour Champions victories.
