Mississippi State football has suffered its first loss of the Jeff Lebby era.
The Bulldogs (1-1) were rolled over 30-23 by Arizona State (2-0) on Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium.
Mississippi State trailed by as many as 27 points in the third quarter. It did cut the lead to seven points with 5:27 to play in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get one last defensive stop. ASU rushed for 346 yards, 265 of which came from Cam Skattebo.
MSU will return home to play Toledo next Saturday (6:30 p.m., ESPN2 or ESPNU).

Following an Arizona State punt, Shapen completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Coleman on the first play of the drive to make it a one-score game with 5:27 left to go in the fourth quarter.
Mississippi State capped off their first drive of the fourth quarter with Blake Shapen finding Davon Booth for a 15-yard touchdown to cut the Arizona State lead down to 14 after the missed extra point. Shapen up to 166 passing yards after the score.
Blake Shapen went 4-for-5 for 44 yards to move the Mississippi State drive down to the Arizona State 6-yard line, and Keyvone Lee rushed up the middle for six yards to get the Bulldogs their first touchdown of the night.
Arizona State capped off a 14-play, 8:27 drive with a 46-yard field goal by Ian Hershey to further extend their lead.
Sam Leavitt scored his second rushing touchdown with the 1-yard score with 34 seconds left in the first half.
Blake Shapen got hit as he threw, resulting in a fumble recovered for a touchdown by C.J. Fite.
Ian Hershey hit a 47-yard field goal to push the Sun Devil lead back to 10.
Kyle Ferrie knocked down a 22-yard field goal to bring Mississippi State back within a touchdown.
Ian Hershey hit a 27-yard field goal to give the Sun Devils a 10-point lead.
Sam Leavitt put Arizona State on the board first with a 17-yard rushing touchdown.
