Dare County Schools has announced the appointment of Joseph “Joe” Tyson as the principal of First Flight High School (FFHS), the largest high school in the district.

The Dare County Board of Education voted to endorse Dare County Schools’ recommendation, promoting Tyson from assistant principal to principal during a closed-session meeting on Feb. 5, 2024. “Tyson brings an impressive background in education, with seventeen years of experience in the field,” stated the DCS news release.

In expressing the board’s decision, Dare County Schools Superintendent Steve Basnight stated, “Mr. Tyson has devoted a significant portion of his career to FFHS and has consistently been recognized for excellence as an educator. He has always prioritized the best interests of students and continues to do so each day. I am confident that he will lead FFHS with the same commitment to excellence.”

Tyson is no stranger to the FFHS community. In 2008, he served as an exceptional children’s teacher at the school for 13-and-a-half years. Throughout this tenure, Tyson earned numerous awards for his significant contributions to education, including the district’s Exceptional Children Teacher of Excellence award, a two-time winner of FFHS’ Distinguished Teacher award, and FFHS’ Teacher of the Year during the 2018-19 school year.

After earning his master of school administration degree from Elizabeth City State University, Tyson assumed a leadership role as assistant principal at River Road Middle School in 2021. Following a year in this capacity, Tyson returned to FFHS, filling the open assistant principal position.

In the latest edition of the student-led publication The Nighthawk News , the editorial staff endorsed Tyson for principal in an opinion piece, stating “Assistant Principal Joe Tyson checks off all the boxes for what we want in a principal. Tyson’s constant presence in the halls and enthusiastic interactions with students — and staff members — help create a learning environment students want to come to every day,” wrote staff writer Kate Wasniewski.

“Dare County Schools warmly welcomes Tyson to his new role and expresses confidence in his exceptional leadership abilities,” stated the DCS announcement.
