Allen High School senior leads toy drive to help children in need
Allen High School senior Piyush Chintalwar is on a mission to change children’s lives one toy at a time. Through July 15, community members are encouraged to bring books and toys to Lion & Crown, Frogg Coffee Bar & Creperie and Paper Source at Watters Creek to assist Toys for Texans in its efforts to provide gifts for children from low-income families. The nonprofit is also partnering with the Allen Police Department and Credit Union of Texas, conducting a toy drive through July 5. Monetary donations can be made at toysfortexans.org.
McKinney North High School names new principal
Justin Penio has been named principal of McKinney North High School. Penio started his career as a paraprofessional at an elementary school after college. His sister, an elementary school teacher, influenced his decision to enter education. He later earned a master's degree in special education.

McKinney ISD Board of Trustees approves budget
The McKinney ISD Board of Trustees approved its 2024-25 budget June 24. According to a presentation by Dennis Womack, assistant superintendent of business, operations and technology, McKinney ISD has seen no increase to its basic allotment from the state since 2019, despite a near 20% inflation. Additionally, school districts across North Texas are reconciling with the expiration of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds, as well as underfunded mandates from the state.
