In battle of Class 6A heavyweights, Trinity's stout defense delivers vs Frederick Douglass

If there was a preseason concern about the 2024 Trinity High School football team , it was a defense with just three returning starters and several sophomores playing big roles

    So far, so good.

The No. 1-ranked Shamrocks forced four turnovers and allowed just 135 total yards on their way to a 23-13 victory at No. 4 Frederick Douglass on Friday in a battle of Class 6A powers.

A week after posting five sacks in a 28-10 season-opening victory at Bryan Station , Trinity’s defense was just as impressive in Week 2.

Not surprisingly, head coach Jay Cobb still sees room for improvement.

“If you’re going to be a dominating defense, you have to do the details and you have to do the little things,” Cobb told our Jason Frakes after the game, lamenting a 30-yard touchdown pass for Frederick Douglass in the fourth quarter. “We had some blows there.”

    Then, Cobb relented.

“But they carried us,” he said.

In other Week 2 games, Male used its solid ground game for a convincing win over host Ballard, and Christian Academy looked sharp against an Indiana powerhouse.
