    Food pantry closed

    Food Bank of the Albemarle’s Neighborhood Hub Food Pantry will be closed today and Saturday for the Easter holiday. It will reopen Tuesday at 9 a.m.

    Legion fish fry

    American Legion Post 126 in Hertford will host a fish fry from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    MONDAY

    Red Cross blood drive

    The American Red Cross will host a blood drive on the basketball courts at the Currituck Family YMCA at 130 Community Way, Barco, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    Flying Kites with Delia

    Museum of the Albemarle open its newest banner display, “Flying Kites with Delia.” The exhibit tells the history of kites and their use in northeastern North Carolina as told by the narrator, Delia, a delta kite. The exhibit is written for elementary-age children and includes historical images and colorful sketches. Visitors also will learn how Orville and Wilbur Wright experimented with kites to help them perfect their first powered flight. The exhibit, which is also in Spanish, closes on May 25.

    Delta scholarship

    The Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma is offering a $500 scholarship to a female junior/senior college student majoring in education who lives in one of the following counties: Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Pasquotank, Perquimans, or Tyrrell.     Red Cross blood drives

    The American Red Cross will host a blood drive at Mid-Atlantic Christian University’s Presley Hall at 715 Poindexter St., Elizabeth City, from noon to 5 p.m. Other blood drives will be held Thursday in the Cypress Room in the Albemarle Plantation Community Room at 642 Pasquotank Drive, Hertford, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; City Road Methodist Church’s fellowship hall at 509 N.     Divine Illumination

    The Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon-cutting for Divine Illumination Holistic Healing and Meditation at Harbor Centre at 606 Main St., Elizabeth City, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    FRIDAY

    Coast Guard Marathon

    The third annual U.S. Coast Guard Marathon will be held in Elizabeth City, Friday through Sunday, April 7. The event will include a 13.1-mile half-marathon, 26.2-mile marathon, 5K race and a 1K race. This year’s Coast Guard Marathon weekend also will feature music, food, and other activities.     Center of Active Adults

    The Camden Center for Active Adults will host Movie Days on Friday and again on Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m.

    Builder’s Discount Center

    The Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon-cutting event for Builder’s Discount Center for its customer appreciation event at 100 Big Daddy Parkway, Elizabeth City, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

    Mammography van

    VFW oyster roast

    Veterans of Foreign Wars will host an oyster roast at 1433 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, on Saturday, April 6, from noon to 3 p.m. Cost for all-you-can-eat is $35, $20 for an oyster sandwich plate, $15 for a fried chicken plate and $10 for a two-hotdog kids meal.     Community yard sale

    Randy Williams, CEO of Talley and Twine, will be the guest for the kickoff for Elizabeth City State University’s Viking Entrepreneurship Week at the K.E. White Center Wednesday, April 10, at noon. A Business After Hours for Williams will be held at 2 Souls Wine Bar at 512 E. Main St., Elizabeth City, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    Max Roach lecture

    Museum of The Albemarle and Elizabeth City State University will host an opening reception for the Max Roach Centennial Celebration and Jazz Festival at the museum Thursday, April 11, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Elizabeth City native A.B. Spellman will be the keynote speaker. Other activities will include jazz history workshops and master classes at ECSU, Museum of the Albemarle and Arts of the Albemarle on Friday and Saturday, April 11-12. Live music performances celebrating Roach’s music will be held on the ECSU campus Sunday, April 13, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    Cooking demo & tasting

    The Camden Center for Active Adults will host a cooking demonstration and tasting event Thursday, April 11, at 10 a.m.

    Legends and Lore

    Elizabeth City Downtown Inc., Visit Elizabeth City, the Elizabeth City Historic Neighborhood Association and local businesses will team up to host the second annual Legends and Lore event Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s mystery clue-based scavenger hunt will center around the legend of local bootlegger Alvin Sawyer and tie into Museum of the Albemarle’s status as one of the stops on the state of North Carolina’s new Moonshine and Motorsports Trail.

    Lunch Bunch

    The Camden Center for Active Adults will sponsor a Lunch Bunch trip to the MACU Mustang Cafe on Friday, April 12, at 10:30 a.m. Bring your own money for lunch.

    2nd Dog Festival

    The Perquimans Chamber of Commerce will host its second annual Dog Festival at the Perquimans County Recreation Center Sunday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    History for Lunch

    Museum of the Albemarle will host its monthly History for Lunch program Wednesday, April 17, at noon. Dr. J. Timothy Allen, professor of humanities at Strayer University, will be the presenter for the program, “Early Coastal North Carolina Quakers and Slavery.” He will discuss early North Carolina Quakers’ attitudes toward slavery and how and why they progressed from being enslavers to advocating for manumission.

    ‘Mamma Mia’

    The ECPPS Theatre will present performances of “Mamma Mia!,” the 1999 musical that’s chock full of popular songs by the Swedish super group ABBA. Performances will be held at Arts of the Albemarle’s Maguire Theatre April 18-20 at 7 p.m. nightly and April 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students with an ID, and children 5 and younger attend for free.     E-Chowan Chamber Banquet

    The annual Edenton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be held at Hayes Farm April 18 at 6 p.m.

    Museum School Day

    Museum of the Albemarle will host “School Day: Celebrate National Kite Month Through Flight” on Friday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to noon for students in grades 3-6. Attendees will learn how kites and flight have shaped the history of the Albemarle region and continue to have a major impact on the area. Students will discover how the Wright Brothers made history in Dare County, talk to aviation representatives, and participate in hands-on activities.     The Camden Center for Active Adults will host a spring cookout on Friday, April 19, at 11 a.m. Cost is $5.

    TarWheel Cycling Event

    The 29th annual TarWheel Cycling Event will be held on a scenic, flat, countryside course through Pasquotank and Perquimans counties Saturday, April 20, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Riders start at Dog Corner Park at 600 Southern Avenue in Elizabeth City and have the option of taking either a 33-, 64-, or 100-mile ride.     The Chowan-Perquimans Smart Start agency will host the annual Children’s Festival at the Perquimans Recreation Center Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Pickle Ball Tournament

    ECU Health Chowan Hospital will host a Pickle Ball Tournament at the Chowan Norther Recreation Center Saturday, April 20.

    ‘EINSTEIN! — Celebrating 100 Years of General Relativity’

    “EINSTEIN! — Celebrating 100 Years of General Relativity,” an 85-minute one-person play telling the story of a young Albert Einstein and his struggle to prove his Theory of Relativity, will be performed at College of The Albemarle’s Performing Arts Center April 20 and 22 at 7 p.m. nightly.     Boogie on Broad

    Easels in the Gardens

    Easels in the Gardens, an event sponsored by the Cupola House Association, will feature tours of 10 private and four public gardens, including the newly opened historic Gardens at Hayes, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both April 26 and 27. Plein air artists will be stationed in each garden both days and an “Art In Bloom” exhibit will be displayed at the Chowan Arts Council. A Grand Finale Garden Party and Art Sale will be held at the Cupola House Gardenson April 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    Farmers Market Spring Festival

    The Edenton Farmers Market Spring Festival will be held at the Farmers Market on Broad Street Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to noon.

    Pig on the Perquimans

    Camp Cale will host Pig on the Perquimans, an annual fundraising event, Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Event will include lunch served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a barbecue cooking competition, a bake sale, silent auction, and vendor fair.

    Coin Week at museum

    in honor of National Coin Week, Museum of the Albemarle will host a program on coin collecting for students in grades 1-5 on Saturday, April 27, at 10 a.m.

    Spring Garden Show

    The Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Chowan, Gates and Perquimans counties will hold their annual Spring Garden Show at the Perquimans County Recreation Center at 310 Granby St., Hertford, Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show features vendors and exhibitors marketing garden-related goods and services, a children’s garden for activities, raffles, an Ask a Master Gardener booth, and a plant sale. Proceeds go toward the Katherine G. Shook Master Gardener Scholarship fund. Admission is free.

    Albemarle Chorale

    The Albemarle Chorale will present “A Woman’s Voice: Music by Women” on Sunday, April 28, at Edenton United Methodist Church in Edenton and again on Sunday, May 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City.     Paddle for the Border

    The 19th annual Paddle for the Border canoeing/kayaking event will launch from the canal bridge at the Dismal Swamp State Park in South Mills Saturday, May 4, at 9 a.m. Participants will paddle 7.5 miles along the Dismal Swamp Canal to the Ballahack Boat Ramp in Chesapeake, Virginia. The event is sold out.

    AAUW Bocce, Beer, & Bites

    The Albemarle Area United Way will host its annual Bocce, Beer & Bites event at Waterfront Park in Elizabeth City Saturday, May 9, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The early bird price for four-person teams is $200, which includes a lunch from Currituck BBQ, two craft beers from Ghost Harbor Brewing, and a Kona Shaved Ice for each team members. Spectator tickets are $30 per ticket, which includes lunch, craft beers and Kona Shaved Ice.

    Run with Mary 5K

    The Run with Mary 5K for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness is a 5K fundraiser that honors Mary Morrison Gillam, a Camden County mother of three and runner who died from pancreatic cancer. Runners will start from Waterfront Park May 11 at 10 a.m. The entry fee is $35 and all proceeds go to cancer research at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where Gillam received care.     Perquimans Outdoors

    The Perquimans County Tourism Development Authority will sponsor the program, Perquimans Outdoors, at the Perquimans County Recreation Center, May 17-19

    NC Potato Festival

    The three-day 2024 NC Potato Festival will be held in downtown Elizabeth City will be held May 17-19. The event features amusement rides, an auto and bike show, free french fries, food and game vendors, live musical entertainment. Featured events include the National Potato Peeling Contest and the Little Miss Tater Tot Contest.
