HERTFORD — Golfer Grant Sellers finished at the top of the leaderboard in round one of the Albemarle Championship, which began Thursday at the Sound Golf Links at Albemarle Plantation in Hertford.

Sellers, who is 25 and a resident of McBee, South Carolina, finished Thursday’s opening round with a 6-under-Par 71 and tied with Jack Crosby, 25, of Greenville. Tee time for round two of the GPro Tour event was set for 8 a.m. Friday.

Forty golfers from Arizona to New Jersey are competing in the Albemarle Championship, which includes a $46,650 total purse and concludes Saturday.

Highlights from round one featured 7 birdies each for Sellers, Crosby and Erik Edwards, who is also 25, of Louisville, Kentucky.

According to a press release, the GPro Tour is a Carolinas-based developmental tour that stages two- and three-day tournaments in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Founded in 2013 by Gary Hough, a former professional tour golfer, the GPro Tour is designed to appeal to young professional players to help them “develop their game and at lower entry fees.” To date, the GProTour has paid out more than $7 million in prize money, the release states.
