The arts have been Savannah Winslow’s passion since she was a young girl.

Now 26, Winslow gets to share her love of the arts with area youth at the Arts of the Albemarle and Viking Sound Studios.

Winslow will be teaching musical theatre at AoA’s School of the Arts this fall. Classes start in September and end in November.

“I love it,” said Winslow. “It is storytelling through singing, dancing and acting.”

Winslow worked with the School of the Arts last semester.

“I want to take it up a notch this semester,” she said.

According to Winslow, students in her musical theater classes will practice characterization work, sing harmonies and learn to work together as an ensemble. Winslow said she tries to help build her students’ confidence being on stage.

Winslow will also continue to offer private voice lessons for individuals through Viking Sound Studios, now located at AoA’s The Center in downtown Elizabeth City.

Winslow grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia, but says she spent time visiting family in Perquimans County on weekends and during the summer.

“I joined a community theater (group) when I was 5 years old,” said Winslow.

When she was a teenager she worked for Busch Gardens entertainment at the amusement park in Williamsburg.

Winslow moved to New York City where she attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. She later earned her bachelor’s degree in musical theatre from The New School in New York City where she also took classes at Parsons School of Design in marketing and fashion.

During the pandemic, Winslow returned to northeastern North Carolina to live in Perquimans. She moved to Elizabeth City a couple of months ago.

She previously worked as marketing and communications director for Visit Elizabeth City. She will start a new job in September as the Performing Arts Center manager at College of The Albemarle.

In addition to her work with the School of the Arts, Winslow said she is looking forward to working with The Center Players children’s theatre program at AoA. She’ll be choreographing the group’s fall musical, “Aladdin Jr.”
