Heavy rain forecast for tonight

BROOKHAVEN — Heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding could strike Thursday night in Lincoln County. National Weather Service in Jackson warns the heavy rainfall could be between one to three inches in some areas.

Localized flash flooding will be possible in low lying and urban areas. If you encounter a flooded roadway remember to turn around and don’t drown.

Thursday’s chance of rain is 90 percent with rainfall totals forecast to be between a half inch to three quarters of an inch. Thursday night could see the same rainfall total but higher amounts can be expected with localized thunderstorms.

Wind speeds are forecast to reach 10 mph with gusts at 20 mph during the day and calm down to 5 mph tonight.

Friday’s chance of rain is 70 percent with rainfall totals forecast to reach one inch of rain. Wind speeds could reach 5 to 10 mph and gusts at 20 mph.

Forecasted rainfall comes at the perfect time. Drought.Gov still reports Lincoln County is 73 percent abnormally dry, which is the early stages of drought, and 27 percent of the county is in a moderate drought.

According to the Keetch-Byram Drought Index, Lincoln County’s soil moisture is between 500 to 700. KBDI is a good indicator of drought conditions and useful in predicting fire behavior. It would take five to seven inches of rain for the soil moisture to reach normal saturated levels. Wildfire danger has also dropped to low for southwest Mississippi tomorrow. A moderate risk is still reported for Franklin County and parts of Adams County Thursday.
