From Seville to Glemont, here's where to go for area Memorial Day ceremonies

With Memorial Day approaching, a number of events will be held to honor America's fallen veterans. Area memorial Day services include:

Western Reserve National Cemetery

The Department of Veterans Affairs Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery will host a Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony, accompanied by speeches, a moment of silence and the playing of taps at the Rostrum (main flag pole), at 2 p.m. Sunday. The cemetery is located at 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville.

Parking will be coordinated by law enforcement and cemetery staff. Early arrival is encouraged. Take a folding chair if possible.

Wooster Memorial Day plans

The Wooster Memorial Day parade steps off at 9 a.m. Monday from the Wayne County Fairgrounds.

Vietnam veteran Larry Watson, U.S. Army, will be the speaker at the service following the parade.

Orrville Frank E. Cook American Legion Post 282

The Orrville American Legion Post 282 is hosting a Memorial Day parade beginning at 9 a.m. Monday. The procession starts at the American Legion, 237 E. Market St., and proceeds to Crown Hill Cemetery for a service.

Shreve American Legion Post 67

Shreve American Post 67 is hosting a Memorial Day parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Lineup begins at 9 a.m. from the American Legion, 10094 Shreve Road (state Route 226).

Following the parade, the legion will holding a chicken barbecue 10 a.m. until all the chickens are sold. Drive-thru only. The cost is $8 a half.

Blissfield Cemetery

Memorial Day Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Blissfield Cemetery, seven miles south of Killbuck off state Route 60.

Killbuck VFW Post 7079 will conduct military graveside services in honor of William Bills, who died March 6, 1935. Bills enlisted during the Civil War at the age of 16 upon learning his father was killed in action.

Keynote speaker is Larry Stahl, an area historian. The Walhonding Rube Band will provide music.

Millersburg, Fryburg and Berlin ceremonies

Members of Holmes Post 192 of the American Legion announced its plans for the Memorial Day services in various Holmes County locations on Monday.

The color guard and firing squad will meet at the post home at 8:15 a.m. and proceed to Clay Street Park to honor the grave of Peter Meyers, hero of three wars. The service will be at 8:30 a.m.

The color guard, firing squad and veterans will form at the courthouse at 9 a.m. to march to the Oak Hill Cemetery. Units for the parade will form in the following order: Color guard, West Holmes High School marching band, firing squad, persons in uniforms, veterans of all wars, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. No political advertising or candidates are permitted.

The parade will proceed to Oak Hill Cemetery. The band will open the ceremonies with playing the national anthem. Commander Craig Lawhead will serve as master of ceremonies and introduce guest speaker Aaron Day, U.S. Marine Corps.

Lawhead will place a wreath honoring fallen heroes. The firing squad will fire the salute followed by the sounding of taps. Services will conclude by the offering of the benediction by Dave Crider, Post 192 chaplain.

The color guard, firing squad and veterans will continue to Fryburg Cemetery for a short ceremony at 10:15 a.m. Afterward they will go to Berlin to be joined by the Hiland High School marching band for services at the Berlin Cemetery that will start at 11 a.m., with Day as speaker.

The band and color guard will meet at Berlin Elementary School. The firing squad and veterans marching will meet at the First Baptist Church parking lot by 10:45 a.m.

Lawhead asks American flags be displayed Monday.

Family members of veterans with graves that do not have a marker to hold a flag are asked to contact the American Legion Post at 330-674-8923.

Holmesville American Legion Post 551

Holmesville American Legion Post 551 will host a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Holmesville Elementary School.

Veterans should meet at the side of the school across from the Bellstore to walk in together. After the service at the school a graveside service will be held at Prairie Township Cemetery. Sandwiches will be available at the post following the service.

Killbuck and Glenmont Memorial Day parades

Killbuck will host a Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. Monday, stepping off from VFW Post7079 and being led by its members. The West Holmes marching band will lead the way to Killbuck Cemetery where a service will be held, including the national anthem being sung by Toni Shreve.

Glenmont's parade is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. from the Glenmont School, led by the VFW members and the marching band.

The speaker at both service will be US Army veteran Forrest Chanay, a 1953 Killbuck High School graduate who entered the army in 1955. He qualified for Officer Candidate School and trained for U.S. Military Police. He served 18 months in the Far East. Upon returning home, he he joined the Army Reserve, remaining active until 1960.

Chanay resides in Killbuck with his wife, Marsha, and has a passion for the American Civil War, working to provide 23 headstones for the graves of local unmarked Civil War veterans.
