A fire broke out early Sunday morning at a downtown Orrville bakery causing it to be close for at least a week.

The fire was reported at 2:20 a.m. by a resident living above Michael's Bakery, 145 W. Market St., who called 911 to report smoke alarms going off and the smell of smoke.

Orrville Police arrived at the scene first, and after observing heavy smoke contacted fire dispatch.

Firefighters arrived to find flames at the rear of the bakery. Engine 69's crew forced entry into the building and located a small fire on the floor.

"The fire started due to a faulty light fixture. The damage was minimal and maintained to the corner where the light switch was," said Fire Chief Chris Bishop.

The chief gave credit to working smoke alarms that alerted the occupants of the apartment and prevented heavier damages.

The bakery will be closed while damages are being assessed and repaired by the owner, according to the post on their Facebook page. They are thankful for the Orrville firefighters for their quick response and for keeping things contained in the middle for the night.

Central Fire District Rapid Intervention Team initially was called in for mutual aid, but was canceled while en route.
