A baby girl is now in the care of the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the Safe Haven Act.

She will be placed with a foster family until she can be adopted.

The baby girl, born on July 30, is the fifth safe haven baby of 2024, according to a news release from HHS . Ten babies were surrendered in 2023. There have been 71 total infants surrendered under the Safe Haven Act since it passed in 2002.

The Safe Haven Act allows parents to surrender an infant, up to 90 days old, at a fire station, hospital or other approved facility without facing prosecution for abandonment. Parents can also call 911 and physically surrender custody to a first responder.
