More Than Stars May Be Coming to the Night Sky

If The Hunger Games holograms come to mind when you think of this, you aren't far off. Soon, you may see more than just stars when you gaze at the night sky. The space advertising mission will light up the night sky if is implemented. This means some of the most populated cities will look up into the night sky and instead of seeing stars, they will see advertisements from companies with the marketing budget to afford such an extravagant method of advertisement.

As outlandish as this might seem, researches from Moscow, Russia have studied the feasibility of launching a fleet of satellites into orbit to fly in information and reflect the sunlight to display commercials above the cities. Now keep in mind, there are limitations. Due to the sun, advertisements can only be displayed about 1 hour before sunrise and 1 hour after sunset.

    How Does Space Advertising Work?

The concept of space advertising involves a fleet of complex satellites that reflect pixel images over a city using the sun. These images can be seen from the ground by anyone who is outside or looks out their window.

How Much Will Space Advertising Cost?

This will not be a cheap endeavor for companies. If a company wishes to advertise in the sky, it is estimated to cost about $65 million for one 60-second commercial.

    Benefits and Concerns

For businesses, space advertising provides massive exposure in one fell swoop. If it can afford the monumental cost, it may be worth it. Not to mention, this type of advertising could become its own kind of light show that people wait to see which advertisements they will see each night or whatever the advertisement schedule is - much like in the Hunger Games when the contestants waited to see holograms of the fallen tributes in the sky.

There are legitimate concerns. The first is that space advertisement will further pollute our skys, as if they aren't polluted enough already - especially in big cities. The second is that advertisements will be forced on us, whether we want to see them or not.

What do you think about space advertising? Will it work? Is it fair? Would you watch it, if it came to your city? Leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts.
