HOLLAND — A little rain couldn't dampen the excitement for a new learning and play space unveiled at Black River Public School on Thursday.

Students and families got their first look at the school’s new outdoor space at a ribbon cutting Aug. 15. Despite rainy weather, dozens of community members attended to see and use the new space, located behind Black River Elementary School.

“We want to get our students outside and (having) experiences that are a little different,” said Elementary Principal Jim Levering. “We now have classrooms built in right outside of our door. ... I cannot wait to see what we’re going to be able to do with this. It just sparks a lot of great thoughts and innovation.”

The space, designed by the Outdoor Discovery Center, includes instructional areas, natural playscapes, a water feature, a pollinator garden and more. Additionally, there is a new amphitheater-style classroom outside the middle/high school building.

Elementary teacher Adam Naylor-Tatterson said he’s excited to use the space with his students.

“This space really supports the Montessori approach of hands-on learning,” he said. “With this ribbon cutting, we’re officially opening the door to so many opportunities for growth, discovery and joy. Here’s to the many adventures and learning experiences.”

Various funding sources were used to finance the project. They include an allocation of federal funds through the BRPS Board of Trustees, fundraisers by the BR Parent Organization, individual donations and grants from the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council.

“Thank you so much for your time and your generous donations. It means so much,” Head of School Shannon Brunink said Thursday. “All these kids here are seeing what happens when a community comes together and does something important for them.”
