( May 2, 2024 ) The sailing team lost the first race of Thursday’s regatta on the road against Sandwich before bouncing back with four-straight wins to return home with a 4-1 victory.

“We lost the first race because we tried out-think ourselves,” coach Bruce Turner said. “Then we settled down and rattled off the next three.”

Jacob Heneke saw expanded varsity action in the win, crewing for Rory Murray. Rocky Monto, Jamie Saravia, Archie Ferguson and Brian Osorio also sailed for the Whalers.

The regatta was held at Peter’s Pond in Sandwich, which always presents some unique conditions compared the majority of Nantucket’s competitions that take place on ocean waters, with the wind rolling in at eight to 12 knots.

“It’s always a little quirky. There were some channels of wind and then channels of light wind. It would go right, then come back, go right, then come back. Our guys did a nice job of realizing that and taking advantage of it,” Turner said.

The Whalers will be back at home for their next three regattas Saturday against Old Rochester, Tuesday against Sturgis East and next Thursday against St. John Paul II.
