While a man played pull tabs at a Minnesota bar Aug. 13, two men approached the player to ask him from which machine he was playing and if he had won.

The player said he did not need to tell them, Minnesota police said, and the two men were upset by the man’s response.

Later, the player won $1,000 from the gambling game, according to police.

After the big win, police said the man and his friend left the bar and drove to a restaurant for dinner. As they got out of the car, the two men with whom they had the exchange appeared, police said.

One of the men, 38-year-old Charles Schroedl, demanded the winner “give me that bag,” as 34-year-old Anthony Ferrara pointed a handgun at him, according to a probable cause statement filed Aug. 19.

As the man attempted to take off a cross-body bag, police said Ferrara fired multiple shots at him.

The man was hit twice in the right leg, twice in the abdomen and four times in his left leg, according to court documents.

Ferrera’s attorney did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment Aug. 20.

The victim was taken to the hospital, police said.

On Aug. 16, officers found Ferrara asleep in a vehicle in an alley, according to the probable cause statement. He was arrested on an outstanding warrant of possessing a firearm despite past felony convictions, according to court documents.

Ferrara was charged with assault, aggravated robbery and possession of a firearm, the probable cause statement said. He faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted on all charges. Officers said they found a handgun and an AR-style pistol in the vehicle, according to court documents.

Schroedl was also charged with assault and aggravated robbery, officials told KARE.

Ferrara’s bail was set at $150,000, according to jail records. He was scheduled to appear in court Aug. 20.

Jail records did not list Schroedl in custody.
