Man who uncovered inbred Whittaker family says they've 'lied' after handing over $1k for funeral

The filmmaker who brought America's "most inbred family" into the limelight has finally declared, "I'm done with them," alleging that they've been deceiving him all along.

Mark Laita has been chronicling the lives of the Whittakers since 2020 on his YouTube channel, Soft White Underbelly, and earlier this year, he announced the death of 67-year-old Larry due to a suspected heart attack. However, things took a turn for the worse when he initiated a fundraising campaign and contributed $1,000 towards Larry's funeral, only to find out that Larry was still alive.

This revelation came after fans noticed Larry alive and well in a video titled The Death of Larry Whittaker, where Larry is seen discussing his own alleged demise from the front porch of his family home. Mark stated that he had given Larry's daughter, BJ, $1,000 towards the funeral after the family claimed they needed the money for the event.

She apologized, and he later chose to forgive her, reports the Daily Star . But now, adding insult to injury, Mark said he gave another $700 to help Larry take BJ to North Carolina to start a new life, but he later discovered that Larry had apparently pocketed the money and not taken her anywhere.

In a recent video update titled Spring 2024, Mark converses with Larry's cousin, Jason Whittaker, about the situation. During a raw conversation, Jason confessed to Mark that he'd attended rehab but hadn't attained sobriety yet: "You're the only person who's honest with me in this family," states Mark.

Irate, Mark spills even more, saying: "You know a little bit of what's been going on. You know BJ's lying to me, Betty was lying to me, Larry's lying to me and I called up Kenneth, the one person who's been honest with me I thought.."

Then the penny drops: "After our last video, Larry calls me up and says: 'Hey, I'm going to take BJ to North Carolina,' and he wanted $700. I said 'as long as you're taking your daughter to North Carolina to get her away from your family then I can continue my relationship with you guys, but I don't want to be part of you guys if everyone's lying to me.'"

It seems Larry made promises with zero intentions: "And Larry goes: 'Yeah, I'm gonna take her tonight,'" he quipped. Mark alleges that he transferred the asked amount, although he had his suspicions: "Now I know that even Kenneth is lying to me, they are all lying to me so I'm done with them."

To which Jason responds: "I don't blame you." Further thoughts spun around, as Mark grills Jason about his predictions for the family's future: "I don't think BJ's never going to leave if there's a possible source of money, which they think there is, but I'm done with them."

Jason didn't sugar coat it: "It doesn't look very good." Mark concludes by implying the family's past reliance on state benefits: "They were all getting money from the state before I even came into the picture. I don't know what to do with them other than just walk away."

Jason agrees: "That's the best thing to do, just wash your hands of them." The Whittakers, residing in Odd, West Virginia, US, have a complex family history marked by inbreeding that traces back to identical twin brothers Henry and John whose offspring intermarried.

Harry and Sally, one of the couples from this lineage, had seven children, including John Isom Whittaker, born in 1882. John Isom later married his first cousin Ada Rigg, and they had nine children, among them Gracie Irene Whittaker in 1920.

Gracie married her double cousin John Emory Whittaker in 1935, and their union resulted in 15 children, including Larry. Tragically, many of their children were born with severe disabilities due to the genetic consequences of inbreeding.
