Phil Mickelson has earned huge sum on LIV Golf and can make millions more when he retires

As another tough season for Phil Mickelson nears its conclusion, the LIV Golf star has hinted his time playing on the breakaway tour could soon come to an end.

Mickelson has just one top-10 finish to his name this season and is languishing at the bottom end of the standings. Mickelson is under no illusions about where he is in his career; at 54 years old, the six-time major champion's best days are behind him.

"I see glimpses and my teammates see glimpses of me being where I expect to be able to compete at this level, but I'm also realistic with myself, and if I'm not able to I'll step aside and let somebody come on in and take the HyFlyers to new levels," the HyFlyers team captain said ahead of next week's event at The Greenbrier – the penultimate individual event of the campaign.

"I'm in every major on the regular tour next year, and I'll be in three of the four majors for the next six, seven years. I would love to compete and give myself a chance to win in those, and I also want to build this out and create a culture that is sustainable and that people strive to be a part of.

"How I do that, whether it's internally as a player and so forth, or whether it's strictly from the outside, I'm going to be intricately involved with the HyFlyers going forward probably the rest of my life, and then my playing career I'll be realistic where I'm at, too."

Despite failing to show his best in 33 starts on LIV, the move has still been hugely lucrative for "Lefty". He joined LIV as a founding member in 2022, inking a deal worth in the region of $200 million.

And although he is yet to find his way into the winners' circle, Mickelson has earned $7,041,933 in individual prize money from his exploits on LIV.

Those winnings are just a small percentage of the $55m sums raked in by Dustin Johnson and Talor Gooch – the winners of the 2022 and 2023 Individual Championship respectively – but it is still a very handsome sum for a player who has not been performing at the peak of his powers.

Mickelson's earning potential with LIV is not just limited to his playing career. He owns an equity stake in the HyFlyers through being the team's captain, which opens up a world of options down the line.

Mickelson could choose to be a non-playing captain and rake in a cut of the team's off-course revenue, or he could sell his stake for a significant sum if he chooses to cash out.
