New York Giants left sweating on Drew Lock's fitness with Week 1 fast approaching

New York Giants quarterback Drew Lock suffered an injury in NFL preseason action on Thursday that will place his new team back on the market for a temporary backup quarterback.

After taking a hit from Lions edge rusher Nate Lynn, Lock dropped to a knee and exited the game in the first quarter, which the Giants would go on to win 14-3 in front of a sparse MetLife Stadium crowd.

Reporting from ESPN on Friday confirmed that the fifth-year gunslinger suffered an injury on the play and is expected to miss the next couple of weeks with a hip pointer and a strained oblique, with the Giants expected to sign a replacement during his absence. Head coach Brian Daboll added to the media that his squad could "potentially" consider adding another quarterback to the roster depending on Lock's recovery status.

Currently, the only other quarterback on New York's roster is undrafted free agent Tommy DeVito, limited depth made more alarming by the dodgy injury history of current starter Daniel Jones , who did not appear in Thursday's exhibition. Jones has only recently returned to game fitness after a lengthy recovery from ACL surgery last season and also has two severe neck issues on his injury CV.

Despite his undrafted status, however, DeVito earned cult status after receiving unlikely regular-season action in 2023. The New Jersey native grew up 15 miles away from Metlife Stadium but was largely unremarkable in a five-year college football career for Syracuse and Illinois, spending the 2023 season living at home after signing with the Giants.

DeVito was sprung into action unexpectedly during Week 9 after injuries claimed Lock and previous backup Tyrod Taylor, earning his first start against division rivals Dallas on November 12. The local product was fairly effective in six starts, throwing eight touchdowns to just three interceptions, and his trademark Italian flair offered a welcomed source of positivity in a bitterly disappointing season for Giants fans.

The second-year QB received the majority of snaps under center with Lock's injury on Thursday, entering the field to chants of "Tommy Cutlets." DeVito was serviceable through three quarters, finishing 8/15 with 92 yards and adding a pair of productive rushers.

"Every day is a step in the right direction," DeVito said afterward. "Try to build off it every single time I go out on the field and have the opportunity to be out on the field. Like I said, a couple [of plays] I've noticed for now, but I'm sure when I watch the film it's going to be a couple more things that I want to correct and get back. But continuing to try to use these next two upcoming games to put my best foot forward."

Conversely, Lock struggled mightily through nearly a quarter of action in East Rutherford, finishing just 4/10 with 17 yards and an interception. He received particular criticism for failing to connect with rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, who appeared open on several occasions downfield.
