Ohio man revenge hacked fleeing mom to death with kitchen knife for 'not letting him sleep over'

An Ohio man allegedly sought revenge on his parents after they refused to let him stay the night with them, going on a stabbing spree that ended in his mother's death and serious injury to his father.

Kenneth Mortimer, 40, got into an argument with his parents on Friday afternoon. His mother wouldn't let him stay the night, and she implored his father to call for psychiatric help for the man.

That angered Mortimer, the Green Township Police Department said in a statement posted to Facebook , and so he lashed out, severely injuring his 75-year-old father. Both of his parents had been sitting on the couch when he attacked.

His mother, Barbara Mortimer, also 75, ran outside, but Kenneth raced outside and dragged her back in, stabbing her to death inside. The police were called to the 3300 block of Palmhill Lane, where Kenneth's parents lived, at around 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon after reports of the stabbing.

"Upon arrival, officers located two victims suffering from stab wounds. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers' arrival. Barbara Mortimer, 75, of Palmhill Ln in Green Township was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, a 75 year old male, was transported to UC Hospital with serious injuries," the police wrote in the release.

The officers determined that Kenneth had stabbed his parents with a kitchen knife during an argument. He was later found in Cincinnati and arrested, then charged with murder, attempted murder and felonious assault, the Green Township police wrote.

Law&Crime reported that he was booked into the Hamilton County Jail, where he reportedly remains on a $2 million bond. He was scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 20. The police claimed he admitted to the stabbing of his parents when they found him in Cincinnati.

Palmhill Lane, where the stabbing occurred, is located in Cincinnati about 10 miles northwest of the city's center in a neighborhood called White Oak East.

It wasn't immediately clear what degree of murder Kenneth was charged with, but in Ohio, first-degree murder carries the death penalty, or at least life in prison without the possibility of parole. There is a part of the Ohio Revised Code, however, that stipulates, "No person who raises the matter of the person's serious mental illness at the time of the alleged commission of the offense pursuant to section 2929.025 of the Revised Code and is found under that section to be ineligible for a sentence of death due to serious mental illness shall suffer death."

Kenneth's mental state was unclear, nor is it clear whether has conditions that would make him ineligible for the death penalty. More information is slated to be revealed once his trial begins after his first court appearance later this month.
