A four-year-old boy escaped a makeshift cage covered in feces to find help before his grandparents were arrested.

Deputies found the four-year-old in "a mixture of both human and animal feces," inside a residence in Hamburg, Iowa, the Fremont County Sheriff's Office say. They were first alerted to the situation after the boy -and another child - were seen outside the home - before police determined their state likely had been the result of being caged inside cribs.

Officers of the Fremont County Sheriff's Office discovered the four-year-old had managed to free himself from the makeshift cage which had been constructed using a portable crib with a baby gate zip-tied over the top. The boy had reportedly fought his way from the contraption and exited the home without waking anyone up.

A second homemade cage was found in a walk-in closet at the Shenandoah home. Grandparents Elvin Leroy Culley, 78, and Martha Karen Perry-Culley, 61, have been arrested and accused of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person and child endangerment.

The boy's parents, Dustin Perry and Lindsay Hamilton, both 26, were arrested for child neglect and endangerment charges after the sheriff's office said a 4-year-old boy escaped from a cage, reports 1101Now.

Police also removed other children from the home. Deputies allege Perry, 26, and Hamilton, 26, left their kids with relatives with instructions to keep the 4-year-old, who has developmental disabilities, in "a makeshift cage."
