Kelsey Mitchell made headlines during Indiana Fever ’s return to WNBA action, both being involved in a scuffle with Natasha Cloud and dropping a hint on her future .

Mitchell returned to action with the Fever for the first time in a month due to a break in the league’s calendar and pulled off a 98-89 win over the Phoenix Mercury at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to seal their comeback in style.

However, the future of the Fever point guard had threatened to overshadow the clash against the Mercury after Mitchell appeared to suggest that she may leave the team. The 28-year-old was asked for her reaction to the Fever hosting the 2025 All-Star Game but her terminology raised eyebrows surrounding a potential exit.

Mitchell pulled a face suggesting she wasn’t overly opinionated or fussed on the decision before she said: “I guess, I was excited. Obviously, I’ve been in Indy for the last years of my life. But I’m excited that Indy gets a chance to host it. Shoutout to Indy for that, I’m excited for them.”

Her reply left fans perplexed in the comments section, as one replied: “Weird response. She saying she out next season?” A second slammed: “Them…. Yeah get your bags packed you’re done.” While a third joked: “bro she has one of the worst PR teams I've ever seen lol”.

Despite her comments, Mitchell played a vital role in the Fever’s victory – featuring in the most amount of minutes of anyone in the Fever team and scoring 28 points, just one less than Caitlin Clark , also recording five rebounds and three assists.

However, the game was dominated by flash points, including a clash between Mitchell and Phoenix’s Cloud. The incident happened off the ball with the Fever in possession in the attack, footage shows Mitchell appear to be blocked and held by Cloud before the whistle blows as the Fever star retaliates by shoving the guard.

Cloud reacted by squaring up to Mitchell before a brawl erupts, seeing team members and officials step in to separate the pair. The flash point between the two former AAU teammates saw both players receive technical fouls after the referees had reviewed the altercation.

Speaking about the game, Cloud addressed the scuffle, saying that the two are both “competitors” in the heat of battle. "That's my dog," Cloud said. "Two competitors. Me and Kelsey have gone at it for years now. We played at AAU together. I have nothing but love for her. You saw us at the end, too; it's always love. That's just competitiveness of the game. I love that s**t... But everything's cool."

Fever’s victory saw them move to a 3-0 record against the Mercury this season and 12-15 for the season. Indiana currently holds the seventh seed in the playoffs, with Phoenix in sixth. Mitchell and co return on Sunday against the Seattle Storm, while the Mercury host the Sky on Thursday.
