    Killer dad beat teenage daughter to death in basement of their home weeks after she crashed his car

    The father of a 17-year-old girl was convicted of her murder in 2022 , just weeks before she was to graduate from high school .

    On Friday, Muhammad Almaru, 42, was convicted guilty of killing his daughter Mia Maro in the first degree. Almaru's sister called Tinley Park police on May 1, 2022, requesting that they respond to the residence in the 7800-block of West 167th Street. According to Tinley Park police, the 17-year-old was found dead after beatings in the basement.

    According to Tinley Park Police Chief Matthew Walsh, officers also discovered that Almaru had taken medications and had cut himself on his wrists and throat.

    Neighbors at the scene reported seeing him taken away on a stretcher at the moment other distraught relatives arrived. They described a state of chaos and loud shouting. According to the prosecution, Maro is said to have crashed her father's car the week before she was slain, following a fight about her prom. Police claim to have found a bent metal rod and a rubber mallet that were used to kill Maro.

    Almaru allegedly wrote a letter to Mia admitting to beating her after discovering she had lied to him, according to the prosecution. Maro's death was determined to be a homicide with "multiple injuries," according to the office of the medical examiner. The home's bottom floor is where her body was discovered.

    According to her family, Maro intended to become a dental hygienist but decided to continue caring for her mother by attending a nearby college.

    Almaru's sister contacted the Tinley Park police to the residence. According to Tinley Park Police Chief Matthew Walsh, Almaru had self-inflicted cuts to his wrists and throat and had taken medications when responding officers found him.

    Relatives arrived, distressed, and neighbors reported seeing him hauled away on a stretcher. They described a frantic, loudly yelling situation. Almaru was admitted to Advocate Christ Medical Center and given an intubation, according to Walsh. At first, he declined to assist with the investigation.

    "We were able to obtain enough, in working with the state's attorney for a couple of days, enough where they were comfortable charging him with first degree murder," Walsh said. Walsh said that she was covered in bruises. "People are traumatized by this," Walsh said. "It's absolutely tragic."

    Additionally, he stated that after looking into the situation, his police sought therapy. "Lots of police officers have been calling me," he said. "They have children the same age, they know this girl, they like this girl, they're friends with her."
